Katerina Kyselica
Through my work, I seek understanding of the individual’s own existence. In the social system pre-occupied with rapid technological advancement, I look inward to explore established roles and expectations, speaking of entrapment and involuntary entanglement. I work in printmaking, drawing and mixed media.

Spiritual Dimension in Czech Printmaking, a presentation with artist Alena Laufrova, Czech Center New York
"In the beginning, there is a flow of thoughts that doesn’t let her sleep. Katerina finds a way to work with it, to freeze the thoughts and express them through her prints. She plays with them in her creative process, and she does the same with the viewers. Although she shares with them the theme, she does not reveal it. Instead, she hands them in her texts for explorations, texts that actually cannot be read..." -- Alena Laufrova, introduction for the exhibition, 'Chez Maman & Other Stories"
"What draws me to this etching is its offbeat playfulness. By choosing to crop the columns of squares and orient them at an angle, Kyselica is giving life to a sort of imagery that we’re accustomed to perceiving as stagnant. The focus here is primarily on the square in the corner that has broken away from the pack, which maintains a dominant visual tension in the print. It is easy to imagine it clicking into its reserved square spot, but its isolation is what preserves the print’s level of interest." -- Rachel Gordon, International Print Center New York.
